Nature and Significations of the Sun

The Sun as atmakaraka - soul, authority, father, and vitality.

## Surya - The Cosmic King

The Sun (Surya) is the **atmakaraka** by default in the Parashari school - the significator of the soul (atma). It is a **sattvic, masculine, royal** planet that represents the core self, authority, and life force.

### Core Significations

| Domain | What Sun Governs | |--------|-----------------| | Self | Soul, ego, individuality, willpower | | Body | Heart, right eye (male), bones, spine, vitality | | People | Father, kings, bosses, government officials | | Themes | Fame, authority, government, politics, medicine | | Time | Sunday, sunrise, midday, summer |

### Planetary Nature

The Sun is a **natural malefic**it burns what it touches by proximity (combustion). However its energy is transformative rather than destructive: it purifies and reveals. A strong Sun gives confidence, leadership, and clarity of purpose. A weak or afflicted Sun brings issues with self-worth, authority figures, and the heart.

### Elemental Quality

Sun is a **fire element (Agni)** planet. Fire illuminates, purifies, and consumes. The Sun's fire is the divine spark in every living being.

### Key Astronomical Fact

In Vedic astrology the Sun is treated as a **graha (seizer)** even though astronomically it is the star our system orbits. Its motion is geocentric in chart calculations, and it moves approximately **1 degree per day**, completing the zodiac in roughly one year.

Key Takeaway

The Sun is the atmakaraka - the soul significator - and its placement reveals where you seek recognition and express authority.
