Markesh Periods: When the Signal Activates

A markesh planet sitting quietly in your chart does nothing day to day. It speaks when the Vimshottari dasha hands it the microphone. This is what turns the concept into something usable: real windows with real dates.

The activation ladder:

Mahadasha of a markesh: the broad chapter runs on that planet's agenda, with a background hum of its maraka duty at the planet's full graded power. A Venus markesh Mahadasha is twenty years long - obviously not twenty years of trouble, but twenty years in which the Venus body-systems (kidneys, sugar balance, indulgence patterns) deserve standing attention.

Antardasha of a markesh under a NON-markesh Mahadasha: a shorter, softer window - one step below the planet's grade. These are the "keep your routines tight this year" phases.

Antardasha of a markesh under a markesh Mahadasha: the classical peak. When both the period lord and sub-period lord carry maraka duty, the tradition treats the overlap as the most sensitive configuration - it takes the stronger of the two grades. These windows are the ones to actually plan around: schedule the health check at the start, not the end.

One more classical gate, from the longevity doctrine: BPHS applies marakas within the lifespan class the whole chart supports (short, middle or full span - alpayu, madhyayu, purnayu). Outside the operative span, even a textbook markesh period passes as a rough patch, not a crisis. This gate is precisely why reading a single markesh window as fate is bad astrology - the tradition itself refuses to read it in isolation.
