The Health Houses: 1, 6, 8 and 12

Four houses carry most of the health signal in a Vedic chart.

When a Jyotishi reads health, four houses do most of the talking.

The 1st house (Lagna) is the body itself: constitution, vitality, and how quickly you recover. A strong Lagna and Lagna lord are the single best health signal a chart can have. Classical texts treat them as the reserve tank every other factor draws from.

The 6th house (Rogasthana) is the house of disease, but also of the fight against it: illness, service, routine, and daily discipline. Malefics in the 6th often show a person who battles health issues and wins through regimen. A heavily afflicted 6th shows where the body's recurring complaints live.

The 8th house (Ayusthana) is longevity and chronic, hidden matters. It rules the deep processes that surface slowly. The 8th lord's condition speaks to long-cycle resilience.

The 12th house (Vyayasthana) is loss and depletion: sleep, hospitalisation, isolation, and the quiet leaks of energy. Afflictions here often show up first as poor rest and burnout, long before anything clinical.

Together the 6th, 8th and 12th are the dusthanasthe difficult houses. Planets placed in them, and the periods of the planets that rule them, mark the phases when the body asks for more maintenance.

Two things to hold on to. First, no single placement is a diagnosis; Jyotish reads patterns of load and reserve, not diseases. Second, and this matters for the whole course: chart signals are a prompt to take better care of yourself and to see professionals sooner, never a substitute for them. Whatever the chart says, trust your doctors.

Key Takeaway

The 1st house is your vitality account; the 6th, 8th and 12th describe what draws on it.
