Manglik and Worried? What Mangal Dosha Really Means, and What Mars in Leo Brings
Roughly half of all charts carry some form of Mangal dosha. Here is what it actually measures, the classical cancellations families forget, and why Mars in Leo this winter is a time to stay calm.

"She is Manglik." These words have stopped many marriage talks. Many families treat Mangal dosha as a simple yes or no label that decides a match.
In reality, Mangal dosha (also called Kuja dosha) is a specific position of Mars. It is very common, it has well-known exceptions, and it is only one factor among many. With Mars entering Leo on 12 November 2026 and turning retrograde there in January, now is a good time to understand it properly.
What makes a chart Manglik
Mars is the planet of energy, courage, blood and conflict. When Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a chart, counted from the lagna (and in many traditions also from the Moon and Venus), the chart is called Manglik. The traditional concern is that Mars in these houses can make a marriage argumentative or impatient.
It is also very common. Six of the twelve houses create it, so a large share of all charts have some form of it. If it always caused problems, half of all marriages would fail.
When Mangal dosha is cancelled
Classical texts describe many conditions under which Mangal dosha is reduced or cancelled. A few of the most common:
- Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
- Mars aspected by or joined with Jupiter.
- Both partners being Manglik, which is said to balance the energy.
- Mars in certain signs for certain houses, such as Mars in Leo or Aquarius in the 7th in some traditions.
- The dosha weakening with age, a view many families hold for after 28.
Whether an exception applies depends on your tradition and the full chart. The aim is not to ignore the dosha, but to check how strong it really is.
Examples: two Manglik charts
Picture Sanya Bhatia, 27, a solicitor in Brisbane. Mars is in her 7th house in Capricorn, where it is exalted. Technically she is Manglik. But an exalted Mars in the 7th often points to a capable, driven partner and a marriage that works best with shared goals. Many traditions treat this placement as cancelling the dosha.
Now picture Tejinder Singh, 31, a train driver in Birmingham, whose Mars is in the 8th house from his lagna, in Gemini, with no cancellation. His dosha is real, but that does not mean he should not marry. A partner with a similar Mars is a good match, and the couple should know where arguments are most likely to start: money and in-law issues, which are 8th house themes.
Mars in Leo this winter
From 12 November 2026, Mars transits Leo. On 10 January 2027 it turns retrograde at around 16 degrees Leo, and from 9 March to 26 April it moves back into Cancer, its sign of debilitation, before returning to Leo. Retrograde Mars periods traditionally bring more friction: short tempers, road accidents and old arguments coming back. If you are Manglik, be patient in relationships during this time. There is no need to panic.
Why families worry, and why a label is not enough
Families worry about Mangal dosha because they want a simple rule for a big decision, and a single label is easier to discuss than a full chart. But the classical texts never asked for a simple yes or no. They ask astrologers to look at Mars's sign, its strength, its aspects and the partner's chart together.
For couples abroad, rejecting a match over this label can be especially costly. A match between a nurse in Brampton and an engineer in Leicester may already involve visas, distance and families in three countries. Do not end it over one unchecked line on a printout. Check both full charts, get them explained, and let the couple decide with full information. If both families are worried, ask for one joint reading so everyone hears the same explanation.
A sensible Mars upaya
The traditional remedies for Mars aim to put its energy to good use. Many families recite the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, or chant Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, where the opening syllables are seed sounds and the closing words mean "salutations to Bhauma, son of the Earth". A Tuesday daan of red lentils to a food bank is another classical act.
Check before you worry
Most worry about Mangal dosha comes from one line on a computer printout. A proper reading checks Mars from all three points, all known cancellations, and the partner's chart.
