Mulank and Bhagyank: The Two Numbers Hidden in Your Birthday, and What 2027 Brings
Indian numerology reads two numbers from your date of birth: the Mulank, which shapes your nature, and the Bhagyank, which shapes your path. Here is how to find both and your personal year for 2027.

Before a family in Ludhiana picks a wedding date, a shop name or a car number plate, there is a good chance someone has quietly added up the digits. Indian numerology, or Anka Shastra, is often used alongside Vedic astrology. It is simpler: it needs no birth time, no place and no chart, only a date of birth.
Two numbers do almost all the work: the Mulank and the Bhagyank. Here is how to work out both, what each number means, and what 2027 looks like for each number.
How to find your Mulank
Your Mulank, or root number, comes from the day of the month you were born. Add the digits until you reach a single number.
- Born on the 7th: Mulank 7.
- Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5.
- Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.
The Mulank describes your temperament: how you react, what energises you, how others first see you.
How to find your Bhagyank
Your Bhagyank, or destiny number, comes from your full date of birth. Add every digit of the day, month and year, and reduce.
Take Harjeet Singh, born on 14 March 1991 in Patiala, now an electrician in Brampton. 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 28. Then 2 + 8 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. His Mulank is 5 and his Bhagyank is 1. Mulank 5 describes a quick, adaptable, talkative person. Bhagyank 1 points to leadership and working for yourself. He started his own contracting business at 30.
What each number means
Every number from 1 to 9 is ruled by one of the nine grahas, which is how numerology joins Vedic astrology.
Mulank versus Bhagyank: which matters more?
The Mulank describes how you behave day to day, and it shows most clearly when you are young. The Bhagyank describes the direction your life takes, and it becomes clearer with age. When the two numbers are friendly, such as 1 and 3, or 2 and 6, the two usually pull in the same direction. When they clash, such as 1 and 8, or 2 and 4, the person often feels pulled between two different instincts.
Your personal year for 2027
The year 2027 adds up to 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, reduced to 2. Eleven is called a master number in numerology, and 2 is the Moon's number. So 2027 as a whole favours partnership, patience and working with others over going it alone.
To find your personal year, add your birth day, your birth month and 2027, then reduce. For Harjeet: 1 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 19, then 10, then 1. A personal year 1 is a year of new beginnings, which suits his plan to hire his first apprentice.
Numerology and the 2027 transits
Two planet changes in 2027 connect to the numbers. Saturn, number 8, enters Aries on 3 June 2027. Aries is the first sign, which links it to number 1. Jupiter, number 3, returns to Leo, the Sun's sign, on 26 June. People with Mulank 8 or Bhagyank 8 often feel Saturn's sign changes more personally, and those ruled by 3 tend to feel Jupiter's moves. If your number's planet is changing sign in 2027, pay attention to the months around that change.
Numbers in everyday decisions
Families use the numbers in small, practical ways. A shop name whose letters reduce to the owner's Bhagyank, a wedding date that adds up to a friendly number, a house number that does not clash with the head of the household's Mulank. None of this needs to be taken to extremes. A Mulank 4 does not have to refuse a flat numbered 8.
The more useful habit is knowing yourself. If you are a 1, you probably already know you dislike being micromanaged. If you are a 6, you may notice you take on everyone's problems at family gatherings in Slough or Surrey. If you are an 8, success may come later for you than for your friends, but it tends to last. Knowing this can help you be patient with yourself and with family members whose numbers are different.
What numerology cannot do
Numerology is a lens, not a full chart. It does not know your lagna, your houses or your dasha. Two people born on the same day share every number but can live entirely different lives. Use it for quick insight, then go to the chart for timing and depth.
