Scored 18 Out of 36? Why Your Guna Milan Number Is Not the Verdict
The 36-point Guna Milan is the most quoted number in Indian matchmaking and the most misread. Here is what each of the eight kootas actually measures, and what the score cannot tell you.

Many families share a Guna Milan result on WhatsApp, for example "Gunas matched: 22 out of 36", and then nobody is sure what it means.
This number, the Ashtakoota Guna Milan score, matters a lot to Indian families, but it is often misread. A 30 does not guarantee a happy marriage, and an 18 is not a near miss. The total is made of eight parts that measure very different things. Here is how to read it properly.
The eight kootas, from lightest to heaviest
Each koota compares the two people's Moon signs or Moon nakshatras. They are weighted, and the weights tell you how much the tradition cares about each one.
- Varna (1 point): temperament and work ethic, a broad spiritual "type".
- Vashya (2 points): mutual influence. Who leads, who follows.
- Tara (3 points): the luck between the two birth stars, counted nakshatra to nakshatra.
- Yoni (4 points): instinctive and physical compatibility, using the animal of each nakshatra.
- Graha Maitri (5 points): friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs. How well your thinking matches.
- Gana (6 points): nature: deva (gentle), manushya (human) or rakshasa (intense).
- Bhakoot (7 points): the relationship between the two Moon signs. Affects family growth and finances.
- Nadi (8 points): constitution, traditionally tied to health and progeny.
Why 18 is a minimum, not a grade
The tradition treats 18 as the minimum for a match to be considered, and scores above 24 as good. But the number is a sum. A couple can score 24 while carrying a full Nadi dosha (0 of 8) and score high everywhere else. Another couple can score 19 with full Nadi and Bhakoot points and weaker scores on the light kootas. The second couple's 19 may be the healthier match.
When a dosha is cancelled
Classical texts list conditions under which Nadi and Bhakoot doshas are cancelled. For example, when both Moon signs share the same lord, or the lords are close friends, Bhakoot dosha is commonly considered cancelled. Nadi dosha has its own exceptions, such as the same Moon sign with different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra with different Moon signs. A good reading checks these before raising alarm.
Example: a score of 21
Picture Navjot Singh Grewal, 30, an electrical engineer in Edmonton, and Amandeep Kaur, 28, a teacher in Melbourne. Their families met at a cousin's wedding in Jalandhar. Their score is 21, and the families are not sure whether that is good enough.
Navjot's Moon is in Taurus and Amandeep's is in Libra. Both signs are ruled by Venus, so they get full Graha Maitri points, and the Bhakoot dosha that this 6-8 pair would normally have is cancelled. They lose points on Gana and Yoni. In simple terms: they think alike, their finances are likely to grow together, and they need to work on temperament and physical closeness. That is a much more useful answer than calling 21 borderline.
What the 36 points cannot see
Guna Milan is a Moon-to-Moon comparison. It does not look at the 7th house, Venus, Mars, the dasha each person will be running in the first years of marriage, or Mangal dosha. A fuller reading, Kundli Milan, compares the whole charts. That is where questions like "Will we struggle in our first three years?" get real answers.
How families can use the score
Use the Guna Milan score to start a conversation, not to end one. When the result comes back, go through it koota by koota, ideally with the couple present and not only the parents. Say which parts are strong. For the weak parts, explain what they mean in daily life. A low Gana score is about how each person handles anger and stress. A low Yoni score is about affection and personal space. A low Graha Maitri score is about how decisions get made.
This matters even more when the couple grew up in different countries. A partner raised in Birmingham and one raised in Amritsar may share a religion and a language, yet have very different expectations about living with parents, sharing housework or how often to visit India. The chart can show where problems may come up. Only the couple can talk them through.
Transits for weddings in 2027
Jupiter's return to Leo on 26 June 2027 activates the 7th house for Aquarius Moons and the 5th (romance) for Aries Moons. Venus, the marriage karaka, turns direct on 14 November 2026 after its retrograde, so many families will find wedding talks move more smoothly from late November. And with Ketu entering Cancer on 5 December, Cancer and Capricorn Moons may want extra time and patience in partnership matters through 2027.
