Is your life already written? What Vedic astrology actually says about free will

If the chart already shows what will happen, is anything up to you? The classical answer is more interesting than yes or no. Here it is, in simple words.

Every astrology conversation comes to the same question.

If the chart already shows what will happen, is anything up to me? Why even try?

The classical Vedic answer is more interesting than "everything is fixed" or "everything is free." It is somewhere in between. Once you understand it, both the chart and your effort start to make sense.

The simple idea: karma has three layers

In Vedic thinking, karma is not one big block. It comes in three layers.

1. Sanchita karma

The total karma from all your past actions, across all your lives. The full bank balance. You cannot see all of it. Even the astrologer cannot. It is just the total.

2. Prarabdha karma

The slice of sanchita that has been picked out for THIS life. The amount you have been given to spend this time around.

Your birth chart is the map of your prarabdha. Your rashi, your nakshatra, your dasha periods - all of it shows the prarabdha you were born with. This part is, in a real sense, "already written." You cannot trade it for someone else's.

3. Kriyamana karma

The karma you are making right now. Today. By your actions, your words, your choices. This part is fully free. The choice you make in the next ten minutes is yours. It will fold into your sanchita and shape your future.

The cricket analogy

Imagine you are batting in a cricket match.

  • The pitch is your prarabdha. It is fixed. Maybe it is dry. Maybe it has been raining. Maybe it is a slow turner. You did not choose the pitch.
  • The bowler is your prarabdha too. Some bowlers are fast. Some are slow. You did not pick who you would face.
  • But how you BAT - that is your kriyamana. You can be defensive on a difficult pitch. You can attack on an easy one. You can read the bowler. You can choose your shots.

Astrology describes the pitch. It cannot describe how you bat.

Where free will lives

Free will lives in your kriyamana. The choices you make today. Whether you keep your word. Whether you apologize. Whether you show up for work. Whether you do the hard thing or the easy thing.

The chart does not tell you these. The chart tells you about the field - the pitch you are playing on, the wind, the weather. Knowing the field is useful. But you still have to play.

Why a chart still matters

Because your prarabdha is real, and it is large. The dasha you are running is unfolding whether you like it or not. The Tarabala of today is what it is. The planets in your birth chart shape what naturally rises in you.

If the wind is behind you today, you still have to set the sail. If the wind is against you, you can still find a useful angle. Knowing the wind is information. The sailing is yours.

This is why even people who strongly believe in free will find a chart useful. A chart is not a prediction of your future. It is a description of the conditions you are working in.

A common mistake

People sometimes read a chart and treat the prarabdha as the whole story. They see a difficult Saturn period and stop trying. "What can I do? Saturn is bad for me." Or they see a good Jupiter period and stop showing up. "Why work? It will happen on its own."

Both are wrong.

A difficult dasha says: the next few years will ask more of you. It does NOT say: nothing you do will matter. In fact, the classical wisdom is the opposite - in difficult periods, your kriyamana matters MORE. You have to act with more care, more discipline.

A good dasha says: opportunities will come more easily. It does NOT say: they will fall into your lap. You still have to walk through the door.

  • Then make your choices. The choices are still yours. The chart shows the field. You play the game.

The honest framing

Astrology has never claimed to predict your kriyamana. It claims to describe your prarabdha. The confusion happens when people read more into a chart than the tradition actually supports.

Astrology gives you the pitch and the bowler. The batting is yours. That is the whole point of having a chart - if nothing were free, there would be nothing to DO with the information.
