In Vedic astrology the Sun (Surya) is exalted in Aries (Mesha), most deeply at 10 degrees, and debilitated in Libra (Tula) at 10 degrees. It rules Leo (Simha), which is also its moolatrikona sign. But the sign is only the first check. Whether your Sun is actually strong depends on its house, its distance from the 10th, the planets with it, and your Navamsa.
Aries is a fire sign ruled by Mars, a friend of the Sun, and it is where the zodiac begins. The Sun is the planet of initiative and self, so the sign of beginnings and courage lets it act at full heat. In Libra, the sign of balance and of others, ruled by Venus, its enemy, the Sun has to share the stage and it loses its glow.
Open your birth chart and read Sun through these checks in order. No single one decides it: an exalted planet in the 8th house, or a debilitated one with its debilitation cancelled, can surprise you.
From strongest to weakest: exalted, moolatrikona, own sign, a friend’s sign, a neutral sign, an enemy’s sign, debilitated. This is the first and most quoted check, but it is only one of several.
Sun is strongest in Aries (Mesha), comfortable in Leo (Simha), and weakest in Libra (Tula). A sign ruled by Moon, Mars, Jupiter is friendly ground.
A planet in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) can act freely. In the dusthanas (6th, 8th, 12th) it struggles to give good results for that house, though malefics often do well in the 3rd, 6th and 11th.
Each planet has one house where it gets full directional strength, and the opposite house where it has none.
Sun gets full dig bala in the 10th house.
A planet too close to the Sun is combust (asta) and loses some of its independence.
Combustion does not apply to the Sun itself.
Jupiter or Venus with or aspecting a planet supports it. Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu with it, or a planet hemmed between malefics on both sides (papakartari), weakens it.
A planet in the same sign in the birth chart and the Navamsa is vargottama, and gains a lot of strength. A planet exalted in the birth chart but debilitated in the Navamsa delivers less than its sign promises.
Shadbala adds up six kinds of strength (position, direction, time, motion, natural strength and aspects) into one number for each planet. It is the most complete single measure, and AstroPal computes it for every chart.
Combustion is about other planets coming too close to the Sun, so it never weakens the Sun itself. It does tell you something: a planet within a few degrees of your Sun has given up its light to it, so check which planets sit close to your Sun.
The Sun is a day planet. Born between sunrise and sunset, it gets a share of time strength (kala bala) that a night birth does not give it.

The Sun is exalted in Aries (Mesha rashi). Its point of deepest exaltation is 10 degrees Aries. It is debilitated in the opposite sign, Libra (Tula), at 10 degrees.
The Sun rules only one sign, Leo (Simha). The first 20 degrees of Leo are its moolatrikona, the sign where it works most like itself after exaltation.
The Sun gets directional strength (dig bala) in the 10th house, the house of career and public life. It also does well in the 1st, 9th and 11th, and in the 3rd and 6th, where a malefic planet gives courage and the strength to beat competition.
