Eclipses in 2027: Dates, Sutak Rules for NRIs, and Which Signs Are Affected Most
2027 brings an annular solar eclipse on 6 February and one of the century's longest total solar eclipses on 2 August, both on the new Capricorn-Cancer axis. Here is the Vedic reading, and the sutak question for NRIs.

There are two solar eclipses in 2027, and both fall on signs that matter in Vedic astrology this year. On 2 August 2027, a total solar eclipse will sweep across southern Spain, North Africa and Egypt, with totality lasting over six minutes near Luxor, one of the longest of the century. Six months earlier, on 6 February, an annular "ring of fire" eclipse crosses South America and the Atlantic.
In Vedic astrology, eclipses are linked to Rahu and Ketu. In the story, Rahu is the head of a demon who stole a sip of amrit. The Sun and Moon exposed him, so he chases them and swallows them for a short time. In practice, an eclipse falls on the signs where Rahu and Ketu are, and it affects the houses those signs occupy in your chart.
The 2027 eclipse calendar
On 5 December 2026, Rahu enters Capricorn and Ketu enters Cancer. The 2027 eclipses fall right on that new axis, which is why they matter.
What a solar eclipse means in a chart
The Sun stands for the self, authority, the father and health. An eclipse on or near an important point in your chart (your lagna, your Moon, your Sun or a key house lord) often marks a change of direction within six months before or after it. It is usually a change, not a disaster.
Who feels the 2027 eclipses most
The February eclipse is in Capricorn and the August one is in Cancer. People with their Moon, lagna or Sun in Capricorn or Cancer feel them most directly. Next come Aries and Libra, for whom this axis is the 4th and 10th houses, home and career. Those are the readers most likely to face a choice between the job and the household in 2027.
The sutak question for NRIs
Many families observe sutak, a period of restraint before and during an eclipse: no cooking, no eating, temples closed, a bath afterwards. Readers abroad often ask whether to observe it for an eclipse happening on the other side of the world.
The traditional rule is clear and often forgotten: sutak applies where the eclipse is visible. If the eclipse cannot be seen from where you are, most panchangs do not prescribe sutak for your location. The February 2027 annular eclipse, for example, is mainly visible over South America and the Atlantic. A family in Toronto or Melbourne following the classical rule would not observe sutak for it. The August eclipse is visible as a partial eclipse from the UK, so British families who keep the custom would.
Examples: two readers
Picture Arvind Krishnan, 46, a GP in Cardiff with his lagna in Capricorn. The February eclipse falls in his 1st house. Traditionally this is a time to slow down, look after his health and avoid big announcements around the eclipse date. He is deciding whether to become a partner in his practice. The eclipse does not mean no. It means he should not rush the decision.
Now picture Rimpy Kaur Bedi, 33, a property manager in Brampton whose Moon is in Cancer. The August total eclipse falls on her Moon sign, where Ketu is. Her parents in Jalandhar have been discussing whether to move to Canada, and a decision is likely around this time. Ketu often means letting go of something, such as the old house in India.
The three lunar eclipses
The three lunar eclipses of 2027 are all penumbral, which means the Moon passes only through Earth's faint outer shadow. Most people will not notice any change in the Moon at all. Panchangs differ on whether a penumbral eclipse counts for sutak, and many do not observe it. Astrologically, they are minor. If one falls exactly on your natal Moon you may feel a slightly heavier mood for a day or two, but they do not carry the weight of the two solar eclipses.
How long an eclipse's effect lasts
Traditionally, an eclipse's effect is strongest around the date itself and can continue for up to six months, especially when a slower planet later crosses the same degree. For the February eclipse, that window runs into summer 2027, when Saturn enters Aries in June. For the August eclipse, it runs into early 2028. So think of an eclipse as the start of a few months of change, not a single bad day.
A classical practice for eclipse days
Eclipse days are traditionally for quiet: japa, prayer and charity rather than new beginnings. Many families chant the Gayatri mantra or the Mahamrityunjaya mantra during the eclipse, and give food or warm clothing afterwards. It is also a sensible day to avoid signing contracts or launching anything new.
