Dhoom Ketu - The Smoke Comet
What Dhoom Ketu is, how to calculate it, and what it reveals in a chart.
Dhoom Ketu (also called Dhuma or Dhooma, sometimes written as Dhoom Ketu) is one of the Aprakasha Grahas (shadow or non-luminous planets) in Vedic astrology. These are mathematical points derived from planetary positions rather than physical bodies, and they carry specific significations.
WHAT IS DHOOM KETU? "Dhoom" means smoke; "Ketu" means a comet or flag. Together, Dhoom Ketu represents the smoky tail of a comet - something that obscures vision, creates confusion, or signals hidden changes beneath the surface.
Dhoom Ketu should not be confused with the Ketu we know as the South Node of the Moon. Dhoom Ketu is a separate, lesser-known sensitive point.
HOW TO CALCULATE DHOOM KETU: Dhoom Ketu is calculated from the Sun's position:
Step 1: Take the Sun's longitude (degree position in the zodiac). Step 2: Add 133 degrees 20 minutes (which equals 4 signs and 13 degrees 20 minutes). Step 3: The resulting zodiac position is Dhoom (Dhooma). Step 4: Dhoom Ketu = Dhoom + 180 degrees (the point opposite Dhooma).
Example: If the Sun is at 15 degrees Aries (Mesha): Dhoom = 15 Aries + 133 degrees 20 min = 28 degrees 20 min Leo. Dhoom Ketu = 28 degrees 20 min Leo + 180 degrees = 28 degrees 20 min Aquarius.

Each of these points carries its own signification. In classical texts, all five are considered malefic in nature.
WHAT DHOOM KETU SIGNIFIES

- Smoke, fog, and confusion - situations where things are not what they appear
- Sudden changes in direction or unexpected reversals
- Travel disruptions and accidents, particularly those involving smoke, fire, or vehicles
- In medical contexts: concerns about the respiratory system and lungs
WHEN DHOOM KETU IS ACTIVATED: Dhoom Ketu becomes relevant when: 1. A planet or its dasha lord transits conjunct with Dhoom Ketu's natal position. 2. Dhoom Ketu's zodiac position is in a critical house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) in the natal chart. 3. The Dasha and transit of planets connected to Dhoom Ketu's sign/house lord coincide.
In practice, Dhoom Ketu is used as a corroborating factor rather than a primary indicator. If other chart factors suggest a period of confusion or hidden obstacles, Dhoom Ketu's activation confirms and pinpoints it.
PRACTICAL USAGE: Most classical Jyotish practitioners check Dhoom Ketu as part of a comprehensive chart reading rather than as a primary predictive tool. It adds nuance - particularly when a client reports unexplained confusion, hidden opposition in professional life, or repeated travel problems. When Dhoom Ketu is strong and activated, transparency (naming things clearly) and caution (avoiding shortcuts) are the advised responses.
