Calculating Your Mahadasha Sequence
Step-by-step method to find your current dasha and the complete sequence.
Calculating your Mahadasha sequence requires knowing your Moon's exact Nakshatra position at birth. Here is the complete method.
STEP 1 - FIND YOUR NATAL MOON'S NAKSHATRA AND DEGREE
- From your Vedic birth chart, note:
- Which Nakshatra your Moon occupies (e.g., Rohini)
- How many degrees into that Nakshatra the Moon is
Each Nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes (13.333 degrees). If the Moon is at 5 degrees into Rohini, it has traveled 5/13.333 = 37.5% through Rohini.
STEP 2 - DETERMINE THE BALANCE OF THE FIRST DASHA: Find the planet that rules your birth Nakshatra. The Moon Nakshatra in the example (Rohini) is ruled by the Moon (10-year dasha).
Balance remaining = (1 - fraction traveled) x full dasha years = (1 - 0.375) x 10 = 6.25 years remaining in Moon dasha at birth.
So this person begins life with 6.25 years of Moon dasha remaining.
STEP 3 - SEQUENCE THE REMAINING DASHAS: After the balance of the first dasha, dashas follow the fixed sequence: Sun - Moon - Mars - Rahu - Jupiter - Saturn - Mercury - Ketu - Venus
If born mid-Moon dasha, after Moon comes: Mars (7 yr), Rahu (18 yr), Jupiter (16 yr), Saturn (19 yr), Mercury (17 yr), Ketu (7 yr), Venus (20 yr), Sun (6 yr), Moon (10 yr)... and so on cyclically.
STEP 4 - MAP THE TIMELINE: From the birth date, calculate the end date of each Mahadasha by adding the years sequentially.
Example (born 1 Jan 1985, Moon dasha balance = 6.25 years): Moon dasha ends: ~April 1991 Mars dasha: April 1991 - April 1998 (7 years) Rahu dasha: April 1998 - April 2016 (18 years) Jupiter dasha: April 2016 - April 2032 (16 years) Saturn dasha: April 2032 - April 2051 (19 years) ...and so on.
USING SOFTWARE: In practice, most astrologers use software to generate the precise dasha calendar, including all sub-period dates. AstroPal's Current Phase page shows your active Mahadasha and Antardasha. The key skill is interpreting what these periods mean, which the remaining lessons in this course teach.
KEY POINT - PARTIAL FIRST DASHA: The partial first dasha at birth is critically important. Someone born very early in a Rahu dasha (e.g., with 17 of 18 years remaining) will experience almost the full weight of an 18-year Rahu period from childhood through early adulthood. Someone born near the end of Rahu dasha (e.g., with 1 year remaining) will quickly move into Jupiter's more expansive energy. The same dasha, completely different life experience depending on birth timing.
Key Takeaway
Your Moon's Nakshatra at birth determines where you enter the 120-year cycle. The remaining balance of that first dasha is proportional to how far the Moon had traveled through its Nakshatra.
