Antardasha - The Sub-Period

How each Mahadasha is subdivided and how to interpret the Antardasha lord.

Every Mahadasha is divided into nine sub-periods called Antardashas (sometimes called Bhuktis or simply "sub-periods"). Each of the nine planets gets a turn as Antardasha lord within each Mahadasha, creating 9x9 = 81 unique period combinations.

HOW ANTARDASHA DURATION IS CALCULATED: The duration of each Antardasha within a Mahadasha is proportional. Specifically: Antardasha duration = (Mahadasha years x Antardasha planet's years) / 120

Example: Within a 16-year Jupiter Mahadasha, the Sun's Antardasha: = (16 x 6) / 120 = 96/120 = 0.8 years = approximately 9.6 months.

This means shorter-dasha planets (Sun = 6 years, Mars = 7 years, Ketu = 7 years) have the briefest Antardashas, while longer-dasha planets (Venus = 20 years, Saturn = 19 years) have the longest Antardashas.

THE SEQUENCE OF ANTARDASHAS: The Antardasha sequence within any Mahadasha always begins with the Mahadasha lord itself, then follows the same fixed order: Sun - Moon - Mars - Rahu - Jupiter - Saturn - Mercury - Ketu - Venus, beginning with whichever planet is the Mahadasha lord.

Example: Saturn Mahadasha (19 years) Antardasha sequence: Saturn-Saturn (2 yr 10 mo), Saturn-Mercury (2 yr 8 mo), Saturn-Ketu (1 yr 1 mo), Saturn-Venus (3 yr 2 mo), Saturn-Sun (11 mo), Saturn-Moon (1 yr 7 mo), Saturn-Mars (1 yr 1 mo), Saturn-Rahu (2 yr 10 mo), Saturn-Jupiter (2 yr 6 mo).

HOW TO INTERPRET THE ANTARDASHA LORD

  • The Antardasha lord modifies how the Mahadasha expresses itself:
  • Friendly Antardasha: If the Antardasha lord is a planetary friend of the Mahadasha lord, results are generally supportive and aligned.
  • Neutral Antardasha: Neutral planets produce mixed results with moderate intensity.
  • Hostile Antardasha: Conflicting planets (e.g., Sun-Saturn: they are enemies) create tension. Even within a generally positive Mahadasha, a hostile Antardasha period can bring friction and delays.

EXAMPLE READINGS

Jupiter MahadashaJupiter Antardasha: Pure Jupiter energy - expansion, wisdom, growth, possibly a guru or teacher arrives. Double benefic.
Jupiter MahadashaSaturn Antardasha: Jupiter's optimism is tempered by Saturn's discipline. Hard work is rewarded; overextension is curtailed. Results are solid but slower than hoped.
Saturn MahadashaSun Antardasha: Saturn (service, discipline) vs. Sun (recognition, ego) - a period of tension between wanting recognition and being asked to work without it. Authority conflicts possible.
Rahu MahadashaJupiter Antardasha: Rahu's ambition is guided by Jupiter's wisdom - often a period of unusual expansion, foreign connections, or unorthodox achievement.

THE ANTARDASHA AS THE KEY TIMING TOOL: While the Mahadasha gives the broad theme (which planet is dominant for years), it is the Antardasha that fine-tunes when events actually manifest. A marriage prediction made for a Jupiter Mahadasha is most likely to materialize during a Venus Antardasha (relationships) or Moon Antardasha (domesticity) within that Jupiter period.

Key Takeaway

The Antardasha lord modifies the Mahadasha's expression. Think of the Mahadasha as the stage and the Antardasha as the actor performing on it.
